The Possible makes miraculous comeback possible
奇蹟的カムバックを果たしたポッシボー

Young female pop groups today are proliferating not only in Tokyo, but also
in other regions in what is called the “Idol Warring Period.” Among these idol groups,
The Possible is probably the one that has had the most twists and turns.
アイドル戦国時代と呼ばれる現在、東京だけでなく地方においても若い女性 アイドルグループがどんどん増加していっている。これらのアイドルの中で、ポッシボーはおそらく最も紆余曲折を経験したグループの一つである。

I was first enthralled by the group last year at their joint live event with another
idol group. The event was so marvelous that I regretted not seeing the group’s
performances in the past.
私が初めてこのグループに魅了されたのは、昨年行われた他のアイドルグループとの ジョイントライブでである。そのイベントは素晴らしく、私は過去にこのグループの パフォーマンスに注目していなかったことを後悔した。

However, Shoko Robin Okada, the leader of the popular group, told me about
Christmastime three years ago, when the group had hit rock-bottom.
グループのリーダーであるﾎﾝﾀﾞ｡ロビン翔子が、グループが底にあった3年前のクリスマスの頃のことを私に話してくれた。

It was shocking for us,” Robin said. “Our group had not been able to release
a CD for more than two years, too. Idol groups we used to appear together
with at events were getting ahead one after another, eventually exceeding
our reach. I remember thinking that, despite the efforts we made, our fans
had left us and flocked to other idols in the end.”
ロビン「単独ライブでお客さんが100人も集まらなくてショックでした。CDも2年以上出せていなかった。一緒にイベントをしたアイドルグループがどんどん追い抜いて行って手の届かない所まで行ってしまった。いくら努力してもどんどんファンの人たちは去り、他のアイドルグループの所に行ってしまった」

The group made its major debut in 2008 and ranked fourth on the weekly
hit charts before long. The members thought they had a bright future
? only to find they had already peaked.
グループは2008年にメジャーデビューし、（オリコン）週間ランキングで4位を獲得したこともあった。メンバーは明るい未来があると思っていた。
が、実際はその時がピークであった。

“After the Christmas live, the five of us gathered at a family restaurant,”
she said. “We were all busy with our solo work instead of singing together
as a group, such as appearing in TV variety shows and stage dramas,
so we were meeting for the first time in quite a while. So at first, I didn’t know what to say.”
ロビン「クリスマスライブの後にメンバー5人でファミレスに集まりました。みんなテレビ番組や舞台といったソロの仕事で忙しくて一緒に歌えてなかった。みんなで会ったのは久しぶりでした。だから最初何を話したらいいのかわからなかった。」

whether they wanted to continue or discontinue our group. But I couldn’t do it,
as I thought if any of them said, ‘I don’t want to continue,’ The Possible
would truly end. But at the time, we all became aware we really wanted to
sing. So we resolutely told our staff we would continue singing together.”
ロビン「他のメンバーがグループを続けたいのか続けたくないのか聞いてみたいと心の中で思ってました。でもできなかった。『私は続けたくない。』と言うメンバーがいたら本当にポッシボーが終わってしまうと思って。

でもそのとき、みんなが本当に歌いたいと思ってることがわかったので、意を決してスタッフさんにこれからも一緒に歌っていきたいと伝えに行きました。

Looking back, Robin believes the concert and the meeting meant a lot.
あの時のライブと会議に大きな意味があったとロビンは振り返った。

“We thought, ‘Now that we’ve decided to continue, we should do so!’
Since then, we were allowed to perform a concert once a month.
Each time, we sang a new song, recorded it and sold it as a single
without any production work at the next live event,” she said.
ロビン「『続けていくと決めたんだから、そうしよう！』と私たちは思いました。その時から月に一度ライブをやらせてもらったり新曲を出させてもらいました」

“Our attitude toward live shows and songs began drastically changing, too.”
「あの頃からライブをどうするかの会議に参加させてもらうようになり、ライブや歌に向き合う私たちの態度も劇的に変わっていきました。」と、グループのメインボーカルである橋本愛奈は話した。

Yurika Akiyama, another member, chimed in: “I put the most emphasis on
giving entertaining shows even for first-timers. Around that time,
we also began giving frequent ‘aori’ at live events.”
メンバーの秋山ゆりかもこれに同意した「初めて来た人も楽しませることに最も重点を置きました。あの頃、ライブで煽りもかなり使うようになり始めました。」

Aori is a kind of shout by performers on stage to the audience to get
them worked up at times such as in between singing during songs.
Learning to do them well takes some time.
「煽り」は観客の心を高ぶらせるために歌ってる途中などにするステージパフォーマンスの一つ。上手く使いこなせるようになるには時間がかかる。

“I was so bad at doing aori that there were times I was depressed after some shows.”
「最初はたぶんお客さんを怖がらせたかも。ちょっと煽りすぎたので」とメンバーの後藤夕貴は言った。
諸塚香奈実は認める「私、煽りが凄い下手なのでライブの後に落ち込んだこともありました。」

They all made their own efforts to discover the best ways to satisfy the audience
at their performances. After a while, just like myself, more and more people were
attracted to their shows and became their fans.
パフォーマンスで観客を満足させる一番良い方法を見つけようと各メンバーが努力し、結果、私のように彼女達のショーに魅了され、多くの人がファンになっていった。

The Possible moved to another record company in 2012, and they’re back
on the charts once more. Why the change? Because now they value live events much more.
2012年、ポッシボーは新しいレコード会社と契約し再びチャートに戻ってきた。なぜ変わった？それは今、彼女達はライブを以前よりずっと重視しているからである。

“I noticed we could do what we wanted much more freely at live shows,”
Hashimoto said. “But in the past, we were trying to replicate what’s on our CDs.”
橋本「ライブでもっと自由にやりたいことをやれると気づきました。昔はCDに入っているものを再現しようとしていました。」

Some people may regard idols only as cute puppets. But each time I talk to
The Possible members and go to their shows, I feel their human power.
They made a miraculous V-shaped comeback thanks to
the human strength of each and every member.
アイドルはキュートな操り人形にすぎないと見る人もいる。しかし、ポッシボーのライブに行き、メンバーと話す度に彼女達のヒューマンパワーを感じた。

彼女達全員の人間としての強さのおかげで彼女達は奇跡的なV字回復を果たしたのである。
